The steam engine driving courses run by ex-British Rail driver, Clive Groome, and his team are the perfect introduction to the art and science of driving a full sized steam locomotive. The day begins at 08.30 am with a cup of tea and an hours briefing about the engine, its controls and its operation. After this (and possibly a bite of breakfast), the engine is examined, any questions are answered, and then it is time for the course member to put all that they have learned into practice. As the day progresses and the student becomes more familiar with their task, they will find themselves travelling further and further until they are confidently driving the engine up and down the line.
Included in the cost of the course is lunch on the day for the course member and a years membership of the Lavender Line Preservation Society.
Friends and family are very welcome to come along at any time throughout the day, there is no extra charge. They can watch the course member and take photos or videos as they are driving, and they may also join him or her for lunch if they wish. In the afternoon, as the runs with the engine get longer, friends and family are also welcome to ride in the brake van that is attached to the engine.
Facilities Available: Cinders buffet is open all day for tea, coffee and refreshments. There is also souvenir shop with a wide range of books, DVDs, toys and mementos available and a there is play area and model railway to keep younger enthusiasts amused.
